As Christians and even non-believers, we hear about the dangers that bitterness can have on an individual. I was a victim of sexual abuse as a child, and my adolescent years were filled with bitterness. Bitter towards God for letting someone hurt me. Bitter towards God when He didn’t send someone to save me. Bitter towards God because He is supposed to be a God of love and comfort.
My bitterness toward God didn’t help, it only made it worse. Everything became worse because I was mad at the wrong person. God wasn’t my enemy. He isn’t my enemy. Even the person who abused me isn’t my enemy. Satan, he is the enemy. He deceived me to make me think God was a hateful God - that holding onto this bitterness was helping me deal with the pain and the hurt. However, when I gave my life to Jesus Christ at 17 years old, my eyes were open. I saw who the true enemy was and that was Satan. I was able to forgive my abuser, and start to live out my life for Christ.
How about you? Are you bitter toward someone? A situation? Is Satan deceiving you to make you think everyone else is the enemy rather than him?
Choose today to pull out the roots of bitterness and plant the roots of love and forgiveness in your heart. Remember that our true enemy is Satan and our true Savior is Jesus Christ.
Always remember that a bitter heart finds no peace like a forgiving heart.
Ephesians 4:31-32 - Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
