As believers in Christ, I think the expectation we place on ourselves is that we must have it all together. We shouldn’t struggle with things because “Jesus died for my sins, and in Him I have the victory”. That is a truth we must hold on to with both hands, and we must tuck into our hearts; but what happens when we just don’t feel the victory? What happens if we question this truth? What happens when we have a difficult time trusting, or fear that maybe God doesn’t love us as much as He loves someone else? What if it’s me? Maybe there is something that I’m just not getting? But we can’t share these things with other believers because what would they think about my walk with Jesus? We can’t share it with our unbelieving friends because they might think less of Jesus. So, we keep it to ourselves and stumble along never getting to a place of freedom; a place of truly knowing the freedom we have in Christ.
All of these thoughts are lies from the enemy. Not one of them can be found in scripture as being something from the Lord. He would never tell you any one of those things, and He would never think that of you.
“His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ. And this gave Him great pleasure.” Ephesians 1:5 NLT
So how do we get beyond these feelings and their crippling hold on us? “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind”, which simply put, means, change the way you are thinking. If the lie is in your head, the best and only way to defeat it is with the truth, and we know the truth is God’s Word. So…
If I feel unwanted… the truth is: “You didn’t choose me, I chose you…” John 15:16
If I feel unloved… the truth is: “God loved us and chose us…” Ephesians 1:4
If I feel not worthy… the truth is: “He chose us in Christ to be holy…” Ephesians 1:4, and I am worthy because of Christ’s death.
If I feel that I’m never good enough… the truth is: “We are without fault in His eyes…” Ephesians 1:4
If I feel that I don’t measure up… the truth is: “I am holy, chosen, and loved…” Ephesians 1:4
If I feel alone… the truth is: “No, I will not abandon you…” John 14:18
If I feel fatherless… the truth is: “I am adopted, belonging to a family…” Romans 8:15
If I feel that I don’t belong… the truth is: “We belong to Christ…” Ephesians 1:3
Is it as simple as just accepting the truth for what it is, no matter how I feel? Yes – I believe it is… that’s faith! So, when the lie rears its ugly head, and it will… we need to, proclaim the truth, speak the truth into our own life – by faith.
“For the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you…” Romans 8:2
“If your sinful nature controls your mind, there is death, but if the Holy Spirit controls your mind, there is life and peace…” Romans 8:6
What we spend our time meditating on will control our thought life. So I encourage you to take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Can we feel the Spirit of God within us? Sometimes, BUT we can know He is there whether we feel His presence or not, because… How I feel does not always reflect truth.
